Color is an important design element when it comes to design and when it comes to how to use color in bathroom design it is a very important element.

In the past, one usually could only add color to their bathroom when it came to bathroom accessories like shower curtains, rugs, or by the use of certain types of backsplashes, flooring and countertops

Any bathroom designer able to understand and apply the basics of color theory will have accomplished an important first step in being able to come up with color schemes for their bathroom design. Whether it is for a whole new bathroom, or remodeling an existing bathroom, the bathroom plays an important role the bathroom can play in creating a sanctuary where one can seek relaxation and be a private refuge from the cares of this world.

Color can have an influence on the mood of a bathroom in addition to adding life, and personality too. There have been many studies that have shown that red can accelerate the pulse and breathing rate, as well as increase appetite. Yellow, especially the soft yellows can help to make people to feel happier.

When bright yellow is applied as a accent it can attract attention and brighten up a bathroom. As with kitchen design you can also use color to make the bathroom feel larger or smaller. In the bathroom it is possible to experiment with the different color schemes, and even adding some unique touches can lead to some great possibilities.

The Bathroom Colors

There are the soothing colors that are more the harmonious colors, or the deep hues which are the vibrant colors. However, when it comes to colors the purpose is to be evocative, it depends on the kind of emotion one want to bring out.

The Main Color Schemes

  • Complementary - This color scheme consists of two colors placed opposite to each other on the color wheel. This scheme is very intense and brings a more dramatic touch to a any room in the home. Complimentary colors can give the bathroom a warm glow.
  • Analogous - This color scheme includes three hues placed adjacent to each other on the color wheel using either warm or cool colors in a combination like yellow and green, blue and violet, or red and orange. These colors can work in bathrooms using different hues and shades.
  • Neutral - The neutral colors include taupe, tan , black, white, cream, and shades of gray. Neutral colors can go with any color as an accent. These colors would go well for bathrooms cabinets.

It is considered a good decorating color scheme is to try to use the colors that one would find in nature, such as sky blue, or the many shades of green, the earth browns, or light or pale yellow.

For more advice on color selections the Pantone "color palettes" that come out every year can be a good source of ideas for selecting colors for the bathroom. Pantone has many different color systems.
