A simple, in depth tutorial on preparing old, worn, and ugly laminate and Formica countertops for a durable, long lasting finish.
Creating a beautiful counter-top need not be an expensive hassle; in fact it can be an inexpensive, and fun, endeavor. Say goodbye to that ugly laminate, and hello to a gorgeous finish!
Painted Laminate Countertop Supplies
Medium & fine grit sandpaper
Primer
Cleaning cloths
Rubbing alcohol
Craft paints
Clear waterproof sealant
Paint rollers & craft brushes
Preparing the Surface
In a well ventilated area clean the entire surface to be painted with alcohol; do not forget all the nooks and crannies and under the plastic facings.
After the area is completely clean and dry use a medium grit sandpaper to rough up the entire surface. If it is difficult to sand under the edges of the trim, try folding the paper in half and cramming it under the lip.
If all else fails, gently remove the plastic edging with a putty knife; it can be added back on later with glue. To reuse it; make sure to sand it just like the countertop.
After finishing with the first sanding, use a rag to clean the dust off the laminate or Formica.
Now is the time to lightly sand over it with a fine grit paper; make sure not to create a smooth surface, sand just enough to remove any large ridges or sharp pieces.
Clean the surface again with the alcohol.
When all the dust and debris have been removed and the whole area to be painted is sanded and dry; start by putting an appropriate layer of a primer on.
Choosing the Right Design for your Painted Counter-top
One of the best ways to find the perfect treatment is to browse the Internet and flip though various magazines. A person can find the perfect look in even the smallest photo ad!
For the not very artistic; there are a myriad of stencils on the market to make the work go much faster and look more professional than simply free handing a design.
Additional Painted Laminate Techniques
Details are the best way to add depth and realism to any application.
Using a small paintbrush with diluted blue/black paint can add realistic shadows to stone, tile, and faux carvings.
The use of a toothpick dipped in the appropriate color of paint is an easy way to add cracks and faults in either technique.
A toothbrush dipped in diluted paint and then gently flicked with your fingernail adds small specks of varying shades, this creates the feel of the natural mica and other textures/looks in real stone.
Sealing your Painted Counter-top
When happy with the look of the paint job apply a thin yet complete layer of sealant with a paint roller; after this dries completely, use a fine grit sandpaper to gently sand the whole area. Clean off all dust with a soft cloth and water, then allow to dry completely.
Now add a second and third coat of sealant using this same method, the final coat requires no sanding.
Care of Painted Laminate Countertops
Though this treatment can be quite durable a person will need to take special precautions to ensure its overall longevity.
Always clean up spilled liquids and do not use harsh cleaners.
A simple wipe with vinegar and water will clean the surface beautifully.
Over time the beautiful luster may get a bit scuffed, if this happens all a person need do is clean, and then lightly sand the whole surface and apply a thin layer of the same sealant.
Always wait at least the recommended amount of drying time before using the countertop.
Remember; bathrooms are humid and drying times can take longer in such situations.
