When designing a small bathroom or powder room, maximizing the floor space gives a more open look. A leg stand or console sink can help achieve this goal.

Bathroom vanity and sink stand options are more plentiful than ever before. Choices are no longer limited to a cabinet or a pedestal sink; consoles and sink legs open up the options and the rooms.

Sink Legs and Leg Stands

Metal sink legs are a versatile option for any style of bathroom. Leg stands are available multiple metal finishes, sizes and styles, from traditional and fluted to contemporary and square.

Custom tops of stone or glass can be fabricated for use with vessel or undermount sinks, as well as lower shelves for towel and toiletry storage. Many sink legs are also available for use with china sink tops, giving the traditional feel of a pedestal sink with built in towel bars and the option of a custom shelf.

Consider using a limestone top, with an undermount sink, on brushed nickel 1” diameter sink legs and pebble floor for a spa feel. A black and white basketweave floor, with a china top on fluted chrome legs will give a more traditional feel, while opening up a small bathroom.

Console and Wall Hung Sinks

For a more contemporary look with universal access, consider using a console or wall hung sink. Console sinks are available in brightly colored cast iron or resin, china, wood veneers as well as stainless steel.

These sink options work well with decorative floors, which can continue beneath them, creating a more visually open room. Consider using glass mosaic with a lit resin console for a very bright, contemporary look, or use large format floor tiles, with tile wall paper and a wenge wood veneer console for a quieter look.

Options For Use

Small bathrooms and modern bathrooms are the best spaces to take advantage of console sinks. Narrow bathrooms, without a lot of turning room, can utilize consoles with integral sinks and wall mounted faucets, or single lever faucets mounted to one end, that extend only 15 – 18” out from the wall. For extra counter space, consider using a “banjo” cut to extend the counter over the toilet, or create a make up area by plumbing the sink to one side and leaving the other area for toiletries.

More traditional bathrooms and powder rooms can take advantage of sink legs as an alternative to pedestal sinks, leaving the floor patterns clear.

Wall hung sinks and consoles will need to be braced from behind, often with a carrier inserted into the wall, to make them safe for use, so check with a contractor before purchase to make sure there is room in the wall.

Since plumbing may be exposed, order P-traps and water shut off valves in the same finish as the sink legs, or the faucet. Shut off valves can often be purchased with the same handle style as the faucet for a seamless look, so check with plumbing showrooms for available options.

No matter the style, consoles and leg stands will help to open a room, and complete a design with ease.
