Hints on Male Bathroom Design

A male's needs are slightly different to those of a woman. If you are decorating a bathroom specifically for the men in the house, here are some points to consider

Keep a man's bathroom design simple but not minimal. A male will typically be drawn to pure black or white and will love the look until it is time to clean. Neutral colours in natural patterns are easier to maintain and look tidy. Pattern is needed, but by using natural products such as wood and stone you can introduce pattern into the room without resorting to floral.

Storage and Landing Space

Shaving and grooming can be messy. Ensure you have space around the basin for shavers, shaving cream, after shave and any other grooming items. Then place a cabinet nearby to tidy them all away into when finished. A bench seat foot locker is a good way to prevent clothes ending up on the floor and if the locker doubles as a laundry basket it is even better. The vanity can be wall mounted and slightly higher than a normal bathroom to give a sense of additional space and makes cleaning the floor easier too. The basin should be deep to get hands into for washing and the tap needs to protrude away from the side of the vessel so hands can easily be covered by the water.

Lighting for Men

Make sure you install two sets of task lighting. Around the mirror, for shaving and general grooming, and overhead for the entire room. Hanging pendants will just get in the way so look to use recessed lighting. As a general rule, mood lighting won’t be required but by putting the main lights on a dimmer there is some control.

Fixtures

A large rail is needed to accommodate a man-sized towel, and if it is a heated towel ladder it not only makes a nice feature but also adds to the heating of the room. Make the shower as big as possible. Don’t compromise the size of the shower for the sake of a few dollars. An extra 100mm can make a huge difference to someone with broad shoulders or stomach.

Install multiple shower nozzles on separate controls. An overhead rain maker and a wall mounted shower slide at a minimum. Just make sure there is enough water pressure to handle this. If this is meant to be a dedicated male bathroom, you won’t need to install a bath if there is one in another part of the house. Instead install a modern funky single urinal.

Well why not? This room is meant to be for the boys.
